COVID 19 confinement March 9 - April 3

ICAI C2.1: 
March 9-13:
Course book p32-35. Reading comprehension and vocab-fishing activity. Here is the correction I just updated (of course it is only the vocabulary since I need you to complete the rest of the activity in your own words and I'll check all course books on the first day of class).

March 16-20:
I Course book p36-38 based on this video. (I will check course books have been duly completed on the first day of class and give an overall participation mark worth 10%) including assignment 3 p38 (mini speech writing) Due Date: Friday, March 27th (In the end, let's do the following: send me an audio file with your best rendition of your pitch! by the way, here is the correction of the above-mentioned activity based on Riz Ahmed's speech, hopefully you'll be able to use some of these rhetorical devices in your delivery :)

March 30-April 3:
 Sessions I and II: Assignment 4 p49: NO LONGER A PRESENTATION. Due to the latest developments and the extremely likely extension of the confinement period, you are now required to write an article (in pairs or groups up to 4) of at least 500 words. I will automatically check all articles submitted for plagiarism through a similar program to Turnitin.

DUE DATE: APRIL 6.

March 9-13:
Here is a word document containing a selection of your most interesting mistakes (from the latest writing task) for you to download and complete. You also need to read and complete this activity on paraphrasing. Worth 10% of this semester's continuous assessment each. DUE DATE: Thursday, March 19

March 16-20:
HERE is the key to the error-correction activity above. All students who submitted the task in question before I posted the key were given a 10.
3-stage activity based on an article by The Observer. Here is the rest of the article. Please send me the completed activity by email by March 27. Here is the KEY to part 1 and to part 2.  You need to LEARN the vocabulary in question, along that of the text on Amazon, by  April 17.
As you can see, there is an assignment at the end of the activity. Team up in groups of 3 or 4 through the collaborative platform of your choice and follow the instructions. By all means, question everything you find on the internet about these companies, especially their eco-friendly credentials.

March 23-27:
I Due to the latest developments and the extremely likely extension of the confinement period, instead of a presentation, you are now required to write a thorough article (min 500 words) along the exact same lines, i.e. using and quoting different sources, on the ethical/sustainable company of your choice. In case you have already finished your presentation, no problem at all, send it to me by Wednesday, March 25.

*Since we cannot rule out an extension of the COVID 19 confinement beyond the Easter holiday you may either write a thorough article (Due date: April 6 min 500 words) along the exact same lines, i.e. using and quoting different sources, on the ethical/sustainable company of your choice or if you choose to stick to a presentation, make sure you include your notes (bullet points won't do of course).

Course book unit 7: complete the whole unit EXCEPT the following tasks and exercises -I suggest you take your course books and cross them out- : A. Types of Markets, exercises 7.1, 7.4, 7.5, "lastminute.com" listening, Research writing (topics: Lehman Brothers, Bernie Madoff...) Client/advisor meeting and end-of-unit project. 

Those are the links to the first videos on financial markets, the stock exchange and bonds (Video 1, video 2, bonds) but you'll find everything -especially all the exercises for you to self correct- on the course's online platform (also available from Moodle).

Homework for Tuesday, March 10: Next book club session: Tuesday, March 10 (50% of the book)

We decided to set up a book club for the remainder of the semester. The book we chose is "Shoe dog" by Phil Knight.

Buy the book in question (paper or pdf version) and read the first 100 pages then fill out the following template (make sure you include all the words you looked up in the dictionary or at least the ones you liked most in the "what" or "so what" section). This replaces the Press Review activity from now on. Next session: Tuesday, March 10


In class: after thoroughly discussing the contents of the reading sheets each group will write a review on the 100 pages in question and hand it in.

What we did in class on Tuesday: Quiz + teamwork on presentations (due on Tuesday, March 17. The idea, among other things, is to question all their eco-credentials). Companies chosen: PatagoniaEcoalf, IKEA, Veja and Ben and Jerry's. This is the website I mentioned in class to find out the political bias of what you read.
